I recently published my very first article for elle.com. As a Young Adult reader/fan girl/enthusiast, I follow trends and enjoy anticipating new releases both from The New York Times Book Review, Goodreads, as well as from some of my favorite book bloggers.
We all know about Angie Thomas‘s The Hate U Give, and I’m sure most if not all of us were first in line to watch it when it prmiered in theaters on October 19th. With the dynamics of our society, from race to gender to culture being dramatically broken down and transformed, The Hate U Give proves to be a timely work of literature that speaks to political event s that continue to stamped the news and make their way into our everyday lives. After reading the book and seeing the movie, it becomes increasingly evident that literature has shifted in it’s societal role. It is no longer a method of escapism, but rather one that confronts and seeks to provoke change. This new wave in literature can be seen across genres from YA to nonfiction, and in my article I highlight some of my favorites.
